This thesis examines subtractive architecture — the organisation of inhabitable space through the removal or displacement of geological or geological-equivalent material — as a distinct spatial intelligence whose persistence across millennia constitutes not a primitive precursor to assembled construction but the most precise available response to a specific set of spatial, environmental, and inhabitation conditions. The research asks how this intelligence is generated, transmitted, and consciously reinterpreted: how the cave produces ritual and domesticity through depth and mass; how embodied and sensory experience is structured by geological enclosure; and what this spatial logic offers architectural thinking at a moment when the dominant construction culture is organised around placelessness, surface, and mechanical environmental control. The thesis concludes that the cave's intelligence is not a formal condition to be preserved but a spatial logic to be continued — one grounded in ritual, domesticity, and the full sensory engagement of the body with geological mass, and one that becomes more rather than less urgent as the ecological consequences of a construction culture organised around standardised surface grow more acute.

Abstract
The thesis concludes that the cave's intelligence is not a formal condition to be preserved but a spatial logic to be continued — one grounded in ritual, domesticity, and the full sensory engagement of the body with geological mass, and one that becomes more rather than less urgent as the ecological consequences of a construction culture organised around standardised surface grow more acute.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
