This thesis investigates the Castle of San Vigilio within the broader historical, urban, and landscape context of the city of Bergamo, with the aim of deepening the understanding of its historical and architectural significance and identifying potential strategies for its conservation and enhancement. The research begins with an analysis of the genesis and historical-morphological evolution of Bergamo, reconstructing the main transformations that have shaped its current urban structure and highlighting the role of geographical, cultural, and settlement-related factors in defining the city’s identity. The study then focuses on the system of fortified architecture in the Bergamo area through the mapping and classification of castles and fortresses according to their typological characteristics, original functions, and state of preservation. Particular attention is given to restoration and enhancement projects already carried out, which are considered valuable methodological references for the development of intervention strategies for the case study. The research approach combines historical analysis, territorial and morphological investigation, comparative study, and the examination of selected case studies chosen for their historical, architectural, or functional similarities to the Castle of San Vigilio. The analysis of these examples provides useful insights into effective strategies for conservation, adaptive reuse, and integration within the surrounding landscape. The findings highlight the Castle of San Vigilio as a significant testimony to Bergamo’s settlement and defensive history and demonstrate how its recovery and enhancement can represent an important opportunity to strengthen the value of the local cultural heritage. At the same time, such interventions can promote greater accessibility and public use of the site while fostering a stronger relationship between the monument and its urban and landscape context.

Abstract
At the same time, such interventions can promote greater accessibility and public use of the site while fostering a stronger relationship between the monument and its urban and landscape context.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
