Extended use of video display terminals has become a structural condition for a growing share of the working population. In this context, Digital Eye Strain, the set of visual and ocular symptoms associated with intensive use of digital screens, represents one of the most widespread forms of occupational discomfort, with an estimated prevalence of around 69% among office workers. Currently available prevention strategies, while established, show significant structural limitations: they act predominantly in an episodic manner, require active and consistent engagement from the user, and are unable to respond to the micro-behavioural variations that generate visual fatigue during work activity. This thesis addresses the problem through an evidence-based design process, structured in a systematic research phase covering the physiological analysis of DES, the current regulatory framework, the state of the art in existing solutions and ongoing transformations in occupational safety, followed by a design phase that translates the emerging evidence into requirements, concept and product development. The result is Ilid, a smart eyewear system dedicated to the continuous prevention of Digital Eye Strain in video display terminal workers. The device integrates a near-eye sensing system based on PSOG technology for discrete monitoring of visual behaviour, an adaptive processing system with individual baseline logic, and a peripheral visual feedback system based on polymer-stabilised liquid crystals. The technology is embedded in a frame with a strong formal identity, designed to position itself within the territory of contemporary authored eyewear without explicitly revealing its preventive function. The thesis also presents Ibrow, a speculative variant in the form of an add-on applicable to existing glasses, exploring a more accessible configuration of the same preventive system.

Abstract
The thesis also presents Ibrow, a speculative variant in the form of an add-on applicable to existing glasses, exploring a more accessible configuration of the same preventive system.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
