The transition of aviation towards hydrogen rests on the operability of the combustion system. An ultra-lean hydrogen flame must stay anchored across the operating envelope, bounded by lean blow-off on one side and by flashback on the other. Its low Lewis number and strong preferential and thermal diffusion make it behave very differently from kerosene, and the tools calibrated for hydrocarbons remain unreliable near these limits. This thesis maps the two limits through a progressive strategy, kept within the OpenSMOKE++/OpenFOAM framework from a resolved laminar flame to a tabulated turbulent combustor. A canonical bluff body flame validates the framework and isolates the kinetic mechanism and thermal diffusion near the limit, then maps a flashback transition. The methodology is finally transferred to a turbulent NASA N1-inspired lean direct injection (LDI) element. Thermal diffusion is the dominant ingredient near the canonical limit. It widens the lean blow-off margin, from φ_BO = 0.11 with Konnov to 0.094 with CRECK and back to 0.13 without the Soret term, and at the same time raises the critical flashback velocity. In the aeronautical element no global extinction is predicted within the explored operating matrix and within the steady flamelet model: every case converges to a stable burning solution from φ = 0.40 to 0.06, with the mean strain two to three orders of magnitude below the quenching value. The lean robustness carries over, but through the strain margin of a non-premixed flamelet rather than a strengthened premixed front.

Abstract
The lean robustness carries over, but through the strain margin of a non-premixed flamelet rather than a strengthened premixed front.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
