The recycling of tires today is mainly based on applications such as fuel in cement kilns and as cushioning material in sports surfaces. These solutions are practical and allow large volumes of waste to be managed, but they present limitations from the perspective of the circular economy. For this reason, the sector is focused on developing technologies that enable the recovery of raw materials and the closing of the material loop. Within this context, the reuse of recycled rubber as a filler in the manufacture of new tires represents an interesting alternative. This approach consists of incorporating recycled rubber into blends with virgin rubber. Although it reduces raw material consumption and environmental impact, it also presents technical limitations in terms of mechanical properties and durability. The present study aims to characterise different rubber compounds to evaluate how the incorporation of ground tire rubber (GTR) particles influences their mechanical behaviour. To this end, five materials with the same base composition were studied, varying only the addition of recycled rubber powder (GTR). One of them contains no GTR particles and is used as the reference material. Two formulations contain 20 phr of GTR with particle sizes of 200 and 400 μm, respectively. The remaining two contain 30 phr of GTR, also with particle sizes of 200 and 400 μm. The tensile tests show a reduction in both strain and stress at break in the materials containing GTR. In turn, the loading–unloading tests indicate a slight increase in dissipative behaviour following the incorporation of GTR. Regarding the volume-change and fracture tests, no significant differences are observed in the global values, although a greater tendency towards lateral crack propagation is noted in the GTR-filled compounds. In conclusion, although a reduction in tensile strength and elongation at break was observed, the overall fracture behaviour was only marginally affected. Therefore, the incorporation of GTR as a partial matrix substitute can be considered viable based on the obtained results.
