Abstract
Ice formation on infrastructure and aircraft represents a significant risk across many sectors, from aviation to road and rail transport, from wind energy generation to power transmission lines. This thesis contributes to the development of a multi-sensor device for the real-time detection of ice formation, with a focus on the ultrasonic sensor, which is capable of measuring ice thickness and distinguishing between different ice types. Following an analysis of the state of the art of existing detection systems and the underlying physical principles that enable their operation, a first technical solution is presented that allowed the core concept of the ultrasonic sensor to be validated and its limitations and potential improvements to be identified. This is followed by a description of the circuit-level work developed during this thesis, which led to the realization of a new electronic board capable of addressing the shortcomings identified in the previous version, reducing its complexity and manufacturing cost, and bringing the system close to being a fully autonomous and self-contained measurement platform. The thesis concludes with a description of the main algorithms for signal generation, reception, processing, and parameter estimation, implemented on the embedded microcontroller and on a PC using the LabVIEW software environment. The system was experimentally validated by reproducing rime ice and clear ice under controlled laboratory conditions, revealing two distinct and complementary acoustic signatures: clear ice introduces a progressive temporal shift of the echo peak proportional to the accumulated thickness, while rime ice produces an amplitude reduction that rapidly stabilizes at a characteristic saturation value. These results demonstrate the ability of the ultrasonic sensor not only to detect the presence of ice, but also to classify its type, representing an important step toward a complete and reliable ice detection system.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
