Abstract
What was once a monument to the ambitions of one of the 20th century’s most brutal fascist regimes stands today a ruin; neglected, and near-erased from collective memory. Nestled at the edge of the Phlegraean Volcanic Fields (Campi Flegrei), West of Naples, Mostra d’Oltremare is one of the most architecturally significant, yet unresolved remnants of an ideological Italy; defined by expansion, conquest, oppression, and the aestheticization and fetishization of power. Since the collapse of Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime in 1943, the complex has largely remained frozen in time. Many of the structures are on the threshold of irreversible decay. It has unwillingly put itself in a sort of purgatory, suspended between a violent past it cannot be separated from and a future it has yet to inhabit. This thesis confronts that tension directly. Conceived during the inter-war period as a monumental, rationalist complex, Mostra d’Oltremare represents a one of a kind design problem: how can a site that is so deeply engrained with rogue political ideologies be re-programmed to serve contemporary civic, cultural, and academic life without erasing the history that makes its preservation both necessary and contested?| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
