Synesthesia : architectural and executive design of the performing Arts Center at Santander Bay in Cantabria

The Synesthesia project is built upon the strategically located waterfront of the city of Santander, located within the Cantabria region in the north of Spain. The architecture project successfully combines itself into the complex structure of the city’s public spaces, namely Jardines de Pereda, thus being inserted into an important axis of urban development and creating a direct, unbreakable connection with the famous Centro Botín (2017), developed by the architectural studio Renzo Piano Building Workshop. The multidimensional cultural center, located in the heart of the park and constantly evolving under the influence of various environmental factors and changes in natural light that occur due to the Atlantic location of the building, creates a new environment that is devoted to the performing arts. In its conception, the composition of architecture becomes based on a strong poetics of the genius loci connected with the maritime character of the urban environment. The complex, which is to accommodate several interrelated activities such as special rehearsal studios, study and training centers, workspaces, and temporary accommodation facilities for the visiting artists, utilizes a two-faced approach in order to communicate meaningfully with its varied environment. The north face of the building features an ordered arrangement that responds to the grid system of the historic city, while the south façade takes on an organic design language that stretches out towards the Bay of Santander. The project creates an immersive and synesthetic atmosphere by means of the fully porous and glazed ground floor, allowing people from the garden walkways to interact with architecture, music, collective study, and nature inside the building.

Il progetto Synesthesia si insedia in una posizione strategica sul fronte mare di Santander, città situata nella regione della Cantabria, nel nord della Spagna. L’intervento architettonico si integra con successo nel complesso tessuto degli spazi pubblici cittadini, nello specifico dei Jardines de Pereda, inserendosi così in un importante asse di sviluppo urbano e creando un legame diretto e indissolubile con il celebre Centro Botín (2017), firmato dallo studio Renzo Piano Building Workshop. Questo centro culturale multidimensionale, situato nel cuore del parco, muta costantemente sotto l'influenza dei fattori ambientali e delle variazioni della luce naturale dettate dalla sua posizione atlantica, dando vita a un nuovo spazio interamente dedicato alle arti performative. Fin dalla sua concezione, la composizione architettonica si fonda su una forte poetica del genius loci, strettamente legata al carattere marittimo del contesto urbano. Il complesso è destinato ad accogliere diverse attività interconnesse, tra cui speciali sale prove, centri di studio e formazione, spazi di co-working e residenze temporanee per gli artisti ospiti. Per dialogare in modo significativo con il variegato contesto circostante, l'edificio adotta un approccio "bifronte": il prospetto nord presenta un disegno ordinato che risponde alla maglia regolare della città storica, mentre la facciata sud adotta un linguaggio organico che si protende verso la Baia di Santander. Infine, grazie a un piano terra completamente permeabile e vetrato, il progetto crea un'atmosfera immersiva e sinestetica, permettendo a chi passeggia tra i sentieri del giardino di interagire spontaneamente con l'architettura, la musica, lo studio collettivo e la natura che prendono vita all'interno dell'edificio.
