Florianópolis, the capital of the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, is a city immersed in nature. It is composed of two portions of land, one insular and the other in the mainland area, and is marked by plural topography, multiple natural reserves and dieverse forms of use and occupation. The island’s morphology, with a long and straight proportion, is limited in perimeter by the ocean, in the middle by topography, water bodies and sensitive ecossystems (such as the mangrove, the restinga and the rainforest) and is split from the mainland by the Atlantic Ocean, forming a northern and a southern bays. This formation represents a chalenge for the human occupation and the urban development of the city, and, most importantly, creates a sensible balance between urbanization and natural preservation. Given this situation, the city has been facing multiple challenges for the past decades: daily intense traffic and mobility difficulties that are constantly intensified by weathering events, floods and extreme heat waves that are increasing in frequency and intensity, and pollution and neglect of natural resources taht keep being overcome by the urban expansion. In order to understand the city’s dynamics, an analysis was conducted in different scales, multiple layers of the cities morphology were explored and overlaped, between natural and urban infrastructures, considering risk and vulnerability of the analyzed frames. Within all this context, this project seeks to rethink the direction of urban development the city has been following, incorporating natural elements in the urban area, restructuring the mobility system to prioritize the pedestrian, public transportation and soft mobility, as well as proposing a different form of land occupation centered in public spaces, proposing urban strategies that allow the city to breathe. The fist three parts of this work, covering context, regional factors and the mainland, were developed in colaboration with Jessica Llamas Ortiz. The material was revised and further developed individually later on, along with the continuation of the research exploring Jardim Atlântico and the design proposal.
