The development of valid and efficient prediction bands for functional data has received growing interest in recent years, with the conformal prediction framework providing finite-sample distribution-free coverage guarantees. However, existing methods can be inefficient when dealing with multimodal functional data, as they construct global bands that must cover all groups simultaneously, leading to overly conservative widths. This thesis builds upon recent advances in functional conformal prediction to address this limitation. We propose a novel nonconformity score that exploits the group structure of the data to generate group-specific multibands, while strictly maintaining the nominal coverage guarantees of the conformal framework. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated through an extensive simulation study across various scenarios, including different mixture proportions, group separations, and heteroscedasticity, and is applied to the Berkeley Growth Study, considering both the height curves and the derived growth velocity curves. Our empirical results demonstrate that the multiband width provides an effective criterion for selecting the true number of clusters $k$ directly from the bands, reducing the need for specific diagnostic tools, such as the Within Sum of Squares. These results suggest that the proposed multiband framework offers a unified approach to both uncertainty quantification and model selection for multimodal functional data.

Abstract
These results suggest that the proposed multiband framework offers a unified approach to both uncertainty quantification and model selection for multimodal functional data.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
