Contemporary independent magazines circulate within an ecosystem in which the first encounter with the publication increasingly takes place through online sales catalogues and promotional images distributed across digital platforms. In this context as well, the cover constitutes the main paratextual access point to the publication, translating and anticipating the editorial project through its layout. This translational function becomes particularly relevant in the case of magazines dealing with eroticism and sexuality, where the need to make the editorial project recognisable increasingly contends with ethical, cultural, regulatory and media-related conditions affecting the visibility and circulation of representations of the body. The research addresses this tension through a theoretical investigation of the cover as a complex communicative text-artifact and an empirical analysis of erotic independent magazines published over the last ten years. The analysed sample brings together magazines belonging to a Western publishing sphere, identified through the online catalogues of specialised European retailers, that are considered as commercial and curatorial archives of the field. The analysis is structured in two phases, the first of which examines the modes by which the erotic is interpreted through the interplay of the layout's communicative elements. In doing so, it identifies explicitness, allusion, recoding, and absence as four modalities through which content and editorial positioning are translated onto the cover. The second phase explores the rhetoric of the visual staging of visibility, observing how representations of the body and nudity are mediated across the different stages of the publication process, encompassing the design of the printed artifact, digital promotion, sales, and reception. Starting from the relationship between communication design and translational practices, the study considers the cover as the result of interpretations, intersemiotic transfers and adaptations to context. In the case of independent erotic magazines, this perspective makes it possible to read the mediation of nudity as a design issue connected to the conditions of visibility of the body. The results show how the conditions regulating body visibility can enter the artifact's expressive construction, revealing the designer's role in visually translating the editorial project within specific circulation contexts.

Abstract
The results show how the conditions regulating body visibility can enter the artifact's expressive construction, revealing the designer's role in visually translating the editorial project within specific circulation contexts.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
