Duplice sipario: la trasformazione della stazione ferroviaria di Salerno da infrastruttura di transito a luogo della città contemporanea

For a long time the railway station has been interpreted as a mainly functional space, a “non-place” where the transience prevails over identity. Over its historical evolution the passenger building has assumed multiple roles, contributing to the morphological definition of cities and accompanying changes in social practices. From a transit infrastructure, it became a space where the dynamic dimension of travel is joined by those of permanence and everyday life. The research confronts recurring themes of railway architecture, such as the threshold, the urban curtain and the extension of public space, interpreting the passenger building not only as a technical infrastructure, but as an urban device capable of connecting memory, transformation, permanence and crossing. Assuming as a case study the railway station of Salerno and the system consisting of the passenger building, Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the public spaces connected to them, the work reconstructs the historical, territorial and urban transformations of the city, highlighting the role of the railway in redefining its structure. The analysis shows how the station, born at the edge of the town, has become one of the main thresholds of access to the city, configuring itself today as a potential new urban centrality, capable of mending relations between infrastructure, public space and daily life. Starting from these assumptions, the project proposes a reflection on the contemporary role of the station. Identifying in the historical passenger building of 1866 the main architectural permanence, the intervention interprets the station as a space where travel is intertwined with the story of the city, overcoming the traditional separation between infrastructure and urban life. “Double Curtain” synthesizes this vision: the station becomes the place through which the city manifests and represents itself, no longer a simple mobility node, but a scenic expression of the territory, where travel turns into urban experience and the city finds a form through which to recognize itself.

Per lungo tempo la stazione ferroviaria è stata interpretata come uno spazio prevalentemente funzionale, un “non luogo” in cui la transitorietà prevale sull’identità. Nel corso della sua evoluzione storica il fabbricato viaggiatori ha assunto molteplici ruoli, contribuendo alla definizione morfologica delle città e accompagnando i cambiamenti delle pratiche sociali. Da infrastruttura di transito, è divenuto uno spazio in cui alla dimensione dinamica del viaggio si affiancano quelle della permanenza e della quotidianità. La ricerca si confronta con temi ricorrenti dell’architettura ferroviaria, quali la soglia, il sipario urbano e l’estensione dello spazio pubblico, interpretando il fabbricato viaggiatori non soltanto come infrastruttura tecnica, ma come dispositivo urbano capace di mettere in relazione memoria, trasformazione, permanenza e attraversamento. Assumendo come caso studio la stazione ferroviaria di Salerno e il sistema costituito dal fabbricato viaggiatori, da piazza Vittorio Veneto e dagli spazi pubblici ad essi connessi, il lavoro ricostruisce le trasformazioni storiche, territoriali e urbane della città, evidenziando il ruolo della ferrovia nella ridefinizione della sua struttura. L’analisi mostra come la stazione, nata ai margini dell’abitato, sia divenuta una delle principali soglie di accesso alla città, configurandosi oggi come una potenziale nuova centralità urbana, capace di ricucire le relazioni tra infrastruttura, spazio pubblico e vita quotidiana. A partire da tali presupposti il progetto propone una riflessione sul ruolo contemporaneo della stazione. Individuando nel fabbricato viaggiatori storico del 1866 la principale permanenza architettonica, l’intervento interpreta la stazione come uno spazio in cui il viaggio si intreccia al racconto della città, superando la tradizionale separazione tra infrastruttura e vita urbana. “Duplice sipario” sintetizza questa visione: la stazione diviene il luogo attraverso cui la città si manifesta e si rappresenta, non più semplice nodo della mobilità, ma espressione scenica del territorio, dove il viaggio si trasforma in esperienza urbana e la città ritrova una forma attraverso cui riconoscersi.
