The thesis investigates the relevance and organisation of early childhood education spaces and services for children aged 0–6 as social infrastructures capable of contributing to urban cohesion, understanding the school not only as a building intended for education, but as an everyday hub of relationships among children, families, communities and the neighbourhood. Starting from the relationship between space, education and the city, the research recognises early childhood environments — both indoor and outdoor — as active agents in processes of growth and socialisation. Within this framework, the growing role of outdoor experiences makes the schoolyard a privileged lens through which to observe these dynamics: not a merely ancillary space, but a place where play, care, autonomy and continuity between educational experience and urban context intersect. The case study is Barcelona, chosen for its urban density, its tradition of integrated public policies and the paradigm of the educating city, according to which education does not belong only to the school, but extends across services, public spaces, everyday practices and municipal policies. Through literature, institutional documents, interviews and field observations, the research examines the programme Patis Escolars Oberts al Barri, which opens schoolyards to the public outside teaching hours, transforming them into free, safe and shared spaces. The programme is used as a case through which to question the relationship between outdoor educational spaces and the community use of school space. The relationship between 0–6 services and the civic opening of schoolyards does not arise automatically; however, it is precisely within this tension that a research and design perspective emerges, one that deserves to continue being explored and put into practice. The schoolyard thus emerges as a hybrid space between school and city, whose centrality depends on the quality of spaces, thresholds, times of use and forms of accompaniment. In this way, it becomes an element capable of strengthening the school as a public resource of proximity and as a social infrastructure.

Abstract
In this way, it becomes an element capable of strengthening the school as a public resource of proximity and as a social infrastructure.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
