Mesh morphing is a key tool in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for simulating unsteady flows with moving boundaries. However, it naturally degrades the geometric quality of the grid, which introduces truncation errors. This study aims to quantify how the degradation of specific metrics like Aspect Ratio, Non-orthogonality, and Skewness individually impacts numerical accuracy. The analysis focuses on the unsteady harmonic pitching of a NACA 0012 airfoil, solving the RANS equations in an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework. To separate grid-related errors from the complex physics of unsteady flows, five controlled spatial distortion patterns were applied to the baseline grid. This approach strictly preserved the original mesh connectivity. By evaluating the L2 norm error of the aerodynamic coefficients, the results show that Aspect Ratio variations have a negligible effect, causing offsets below 1%. On the other hand, high Non-orthogonality and near-wall Skewness heavily compromise accuracy. They cause a shift in the hysteresis cycles and mainly affect the drag predictions. A comparison between solvers also highlights that the node-centred architecture of SU2 is naturally more robust to mesh distortion compared to the cell-centred formulation of OpenFOAM. Finally, a new a priori compound quality index Q is proposed. This metric combines Skewness, Non-orthogonality, and wall distance to evaluate the accumulation of discretisation errors, supporting informed mesh assessment prior to dynamic simulations.

Abstract
This metric combines Skewness, Non-orthogonality, and wall distance to evaluate the accumulation of discretisation errors, supporting informed mesh assessment prior to dynamic simulations.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
