The organic fraction of municipal solid waste generated by supermarkets is a waste stream with high moisture content and biodegradability, where the treatment needs to balance economic feasibility, energy demand and environmental performance. This thesis compares the technologies of anaerobic digestion, hydrothermal carbonisation, gasification and pyrolysis for a representative Italian supermarket producing 100 t/y of wet OFMSW or 25 t/y on a dry basis. The assessment involves process modelling, techno-economic analysis, gate-to-gate life cycle assessment using the Environmental Footprint 3.1 method and min-max multicriteria decision-making. The weights of energy demand, economic performance and greenhouse-gas emissions are 20%, 50% and 30%, respectively. Anaerobic digestion shows the lowest energy demand and emissions, but its economic performance is limited by the current treatment contract. Hydrothermal carbonisation achieves the best overall balance, mainly because it avoids intensive pre-drying and generates hydrochar revenue. Gasification and pyrolysis are penalised by the drying requirement of the wet feedstock. The final MCDM ranking identifies hydrothermal carbonisation as the preferred option, with a score of 0.9442, followed by anaerobic digestion, gasification, and pyrolysis.

Abstract
The final MCDM ranking identifies hydrothermal carbonisation as the preferred option, with a score of 0.9442, followed by anaerobic digestion, gasification, and pyrolysis.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
