The yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) poses a growing threat to biodiversity and beekeeping, making early detection essential. This thesis presents the design, implementation and field validation of a distributed smart-trap system for automated hornet monitoring. Each trap integrates a Raspberry Pi 5, a global-shutter camera and a low-cost mechanical structure suitable for 3D printing. An event-driven computer vision pipeline performs motion detection, insect localization and hornet classification directly on the edge node. The identification process adopts a two-stage architecture based on YOLO26 models: the first model localizes insects within the image, while a binary classifier analyzes the extracted regions. This approach reduces the influence of the background and the domain gap between trap-acquired images and publicly sourced data. Several model combinations were compared in terms of accuracy, processing speed, memory usage and model size. The selected YOLO26-s/YOLO26-s configuration achieved 97% accuracy while processing 2.81 images per second on the Raspberry Pi 5. The traps communicate over a private network with an NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin central node, which manages data synchronization and storage, remote maintenance, operator validation, geolocation of detections and supervision through a web interface. Field experiments, conducted mainly using Vespa crabro as a proxy because of the limited local availability of Vespa velutina, demonstrated the feasibility of the system. The classifier achieved a field precision of 82.6%, with no false negatives observed among the manually reviewed crops. The developed system represents a modular, low-cost proof of concept for autonomous and distributed hornet monitoring and can be adapted to other insect species by retraining the classifier.
