International master's programmes create valuable learning communities that often weaken after graduation, despite the lasting social, emotional, and professional relationships developed during students' studies. This thesis explores how service design can support these relationships by designing a sustainable community network for the Master's programme in Product-Service System Design (PSSD) at Politecnico di Milano. The research originated from the organisation of the programme's twentieth anniversary celebrations, which revealed both the strength of the global PSSD community and the difficulty of maintaining meaningful connections once graduates returned to different countries. Building on this experience, the study combines a literature review on alumni engagement, sense of belonging, transition theory, and service ecosystem design with an analysis of existing alumni initiatives and external community models. A mixed-methods research approach was adopted, including an online survey involving 107 students and alumni, semi-structured interviews, stakeholder interviews, and co-design workshops. The findings show that the transition from university to professional life is the most challenging period for many graduates. During this stage, participants expressed needs that extend beyond career support and include belonging, peer learning, international networking, and continued engagement with the PSSD community. In response to these findings, the thesis proposes the PSSD Community Network, a service ecosystem structured around three interconnected pillars: Career Orientation Program, the Alumni International Network, and the Community Infrastructure and Visibility System. Rather than developing isolated services, the proposal creates a flexible infrastructure that encourages knowledge exchange, mutual support, and shared responsibility among students, alumni, faculty, and external partners. Several components of the network, including PSSD Exploring, Alumni Stories, Global Circles, and the Global Ambassador Programme, were designed, implemented, and evaluated during the research process, demonstrating the potential of a community-led model supported by the institution. By reframing alumni engagement as a reciprocal community rather than an institution-centred activity, this research contributes to service design by showing how relational infrastructures can support professional transition, strengthen communities of practice, and create long-term value for international higher education programmes.
I corsi di laurea magistrale internazionali danno vita a ricche comunità di apprendimento che, al termine del percorso formativo, tendono progressivamente a dissolversi, nonostante le relazioni sociali, emotive e professionali costruite durante il percorso di studi. Questa tesi esplora come il service design possa sostenere la continuità di tali relazioni attraverso la progettazione di una rete comunitaria sostenibile per il Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Product-Service System Design (PSSD) del Politecnico di Milano. La ricerca prende avvio dall'organizzazione delle celebrazioni per il ventesimo anniversario del corso, un'esperienza che ha rivelato al contempo la forza della comunità globale del PSSD e la difficoltà di mantenere connessioni significative dopo il rientro dei laureati nei rispettivi Paesi. A partire da questa esperienza, lo studio integra una revisione della letteratura su alumni engagement, senso di appartenenza, teoria della transizione e service ecosystem design con un'analisi delle iniziative esistenti dedicate agli alumni e di modelli comunitari esterni. È stato adottato un approccio metodologico misto che comprende un questionario online somministrato a 107 tra studenti e alumni, interviste semi-strutturate, interviste agli stakeholder e workshop di co-design. I risultati evidenziano come la transizione dall'università al mondo del lavoro costituisca la fase più critica per molti laureati. In questo periodo emergono bisogni che vanno ben oltre il semplice orientamento professionale e includono il senso di appartenenza, l'apprendimento tra pari, il networking internazionale e il desiderio di mantenere un legame vivo con la comunità PSSD. In risposta a tali risultati, la tesi propone il PSSD Community Network, un ecosistema di servizi articolato attorno a tre pilastri strategici interconnessi: il Career Orientation Program, l'Alumni International Network e il Community Infrastructure and Visibility System. Anziché sviluppare servizi isolati, la proposta definisce un'infrastruttura relazionale flessibile che promuove lo scambio di conoscenze, il supporto reciproco e la responsabilità condivisa tra studenti, alumni, docenti e partner esterni. Alcune componenti del network — tra cui PSSD Exploring, Alumni Stories, Global Circles e il Global Ambassador Program — sono state progettate, implementate e valutate nel corso della ricerca, dimostrando il potenziale di un modello a guida comunitaria sostenuto dall'istituzione. Reinterpretando l'alumni engagement come pratica di comunità reciproca, piuttosto che come attività orientata esclusivamente all'istituzione, questa ricerca offre un contributo al dibattito sul service design mostrando come infrastrutture relazionali possano supportare la transizione professionale, rafforzare le comunità di pratica e generare valore duraturo per i programmi universitari internazionali.
