Cooking and the sharing of meals are fundamental social practices capable of profoundly influencing the ways in which relationships are formed and communities are built. The act of eating together goes beyond the dimension of everyday necessity, acquiring cultural and spatial value and becoming a practice capable of activating encounter, dialogue, and a sense of belonging. The research develops through multiple levels of analysis. The first phase focuses on the cultural and historical interpretation of culinary practices, understood as deeply rooted social phenomena capable of influencing ways of inhabiting spaces and collective life. Subsequently, the study investigates the role of food as a driver of social relationships and as a tool for activating space, observing how these dynamics emerge and are structured within both domestic and urban contexts. The research aims to demonstrate that the values associated with food rituals, when expressed through designed spaces, represent some of the most powerful tools for interaction between individuals, capable of generating new relationships and restoring centrality to the places in which they take place. From this phase of knowledge and investigation, the methodological design process begins. Through the analysis of case studies, recurring values, strategies, and spatial devices are identified and subsequently translated into design principles. The project therefore emerges as a synthesis between theoretical research and observation of reality, with the aim of transforming the relational qualities of food into a tool for urban regeneration and community building. In large cities such as Milan, the main places of public life and social interaction are often connected to food and conviviality. However, these spaces are frequently accessible only to certain social groups. There is another Milan, made up of people who struggle to sustain themselves, including in terms of access to food. Despite the presence of numerous organizations that provide daily support to people in need, there is a clear need to address not only the lack of food resources but also the absence of spaces for shared meals and collective experiences. The thesis focuses on the invisible: not only those who struggle to meet their basic food needs, but also those who, due to their origin, culture, or social condition, are excluded from the main dynamics of urban life. Through the analysis of the most vulnerable contexts of the city, the research identifies the places where these conditions become most evident. The research therefore defines the theoretical foundations of a design strategy in which food rituals become a tool for inclusion, sharing, and community building. The proposal takes the form of shared urban kitchens located within Milan’s most fragile neighborhoods: collective spaces where Convivio Urbano transforms cooking and eating together into opportunities for encounter, relationships, and participation in public life.

Abstract
The proposal takes the form of shared urban kitchens located within Milan’s most fragile neighborhoods: collective spaces where Convivio Urbano transforms cooking and eating together into opportunities for encounter, relationships, and participation in public life.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
