This thesis investigates how small-scale urban streets can be transformed to better support residents, local businesses, children, and social life. Taking Via Gerolamo Rovetta and Piazzale Governo Provvisorio, a mixed-use street in Milan, as the site, the research explores how it may respond to changing mobility systems and the redistribution of road space. In terms of design framework and case studies, the project is informed by concepts such as tactical urbanism, the 15-minute city, and people-oriented mobility scenarios, all of which reconsider the street as a place for proximity, care, ecology, and everyday public life. Through field observation, mapping and behavioural analysis, the research reveals that street life in the neighbourhood already demonstrates social and commercial potential, yet its activities are unevenly distributed across space and time. In response, the thesis proposes the concept of the street as a Dynamic Commons: a shared public realm where different users, activities, and temporal rhythms continuously negotiate and occupy space. The design proposal develops three spatial strategies: Shared Edge, Distributed “Common Spots” and Time-Based Occupation. Together, the project envisions a future street where mobility, ecology, commerce, and community life are reorganised into a more balanced and vibrant urban environment.

Abstract
Together, the project envisions a future street where mobility, ecology, commerce, and community life are reorganised into a more balanced and vibrant urban environment.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
