Tra sapere e acqua: progetto di una biblioteca contemporanea per la città di Copenaghen

This thesis addresses the theme of the contemporary library and its role within the city of the 21st century. Phenomena such as the increasing digitization of information and the spread of new modes of access to knowledge have progressively transformed the traditional function of the library, making it necessary to reflect on the contribution it can still offer to the community. The aim of the research is to investigate how architecture can contribute to redefining the library as a cultural and civic landmark, capable of maintaining its central role within contemporary society. The evolution of the public library and its transformation into a “third place” are analyzed, understood as an open, inclusive space oriented toward the creation of social relationships. The city chosen as a case study in Copenhagen, as it stands out of the quality of its public spaces, its focus on sustainability, and its deep relationship with water. The project of a new contemporary library is located in an area characterized by an urban void, where physical and perceptual relationships between the city and the waterfront can be reconstructed. The project therefore takes on a dual function: on the one hand, it responds to the cultural and social needs of the community, on the other, it acts as an element of urban reconnection, capable of restoring continuity between public spaces, pathways and the coastal landscape.

La presente tesi affronta il tema della biblioteca contemporanea e del suo ruolo all’interno della città del XXI secolo. Fenomeni come la crescente digitalizzazione dell’informazione e la diffusione di nuove modalità di accesso alla conoscenza hanno progressivamente modificato la funzione tradizionale della biblioteca, rendendo così necessaria una riflessione sul contributo che essa può ancora offrire alla comunità. L’obiettivo della ricerca è indagare come l’architettura possa contribuire a ridefinire la biblioteca come presidio culturale e civico, capace di mantenere la propria centralità all’interno della società contemporanea. Vengono analizzate l’evoluzione della biblioteca pubblica e la sua trasformazione come ’’terzo luogo’’, inteso come spazio aperto, inclusivo e orientato alla costruzione di relazioni sociali. La città scelta come caso studio è Copenaghen, in quanto si distingue per la qualità dei suoi spazi pubblici, per l’attenzione alla sostenibilità e il profondo rapporto con l’acqua. Il progetto di una nuova biblioteca contemporanea s’inserisce in un’area caratterizzata da un vuoto urbano in cui ricostruire relazioni fisiche e percettive tra la città e il lungomare. Il progetto assume quindi una duplice funzione: da un lato risponde alle esigenze culturali e sociali della comunità, e dall’altro si configura come elemento di ricucitura urbana, capace di ristabilire continuità tra spazi pubblici, percorsi e paesaggio costiero.
