Within the field of mental health, some psychological conditions remain invisible to external observers and are often trivialized or misunderstood. Anxiety disorder is one of these conditions and is frequently dismissed as a temporary vulnerability rather than recognized as a potentially disabling condition. In this context, communication design can be understood as both an act of translation and an ethical movement toward the Other. More specifically, this research aims to demonstrate how audiovisual language can translate the inner experience of anxiety disorder into perceptible and shareable forms, fostering empathy and promoting a deeper understanding of the disorder. Following an examination of the social and cultural context of anxiety disorder and the state of the art in communication design on this topic, the research focused on audiovisual media. An initial phase involved the analysis of film scenes and single-channel video art to identify audiovisual strategies used to represent anxiety. The project-based phase then began with the collection of qualitative data through interviews with five individuals diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. The interviews were developed in collaboration with a psychologist and supported by a purpose-built audiovisual library. The collected testimonies were translated into five single-channel video artworks designed to express the subjective experience of the disorder and encourage audience identification. The resulting artworks were subsequently integrated into a dedicated online platform designed to contextualize and provide access to the works, collect feedback from participants and external volunteers, and make the audiovisual library available to future researchers. The aim of this research was to demonstrate how communication design, and audiovisual media in particular, can translate the lived experience of anxiety disorder into a shared experience, fostering understanding and inclusion. Furthermore, the model developed is replicable and can be extended to other samples and psychological conditions thanks to the subjective nature of inner experiences and the wide range of possible audiovisual translations.

Abstract
Furthermore, the model developed is replicable and can be extended to other samples and psychological conditions thanks to the subjective nature of inner experiences and the wide range of possible audiovisual translations.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
