In the current context, road pavement maintenance represents a fundamental tool for ensuring adequate levels of road safety while also contributing to the environmental sustainability of infrastructure. Sustainable maintenance management makes it possible to address several critical issues typical of urban areas, such as surface overheating, urban heat island effect, and noise pollution. Within this framework, durability plays a central role: extending pavements service life allows to reduce the frequency of maintenance interventions, thereby limiting material consumption, construction activities and associated emissions, and disruptions to traffic caused by roadworks. Furthermore, the progressive road pavement deterioration, resulting from the combined action of vehicular traffic and environmental agents, can compromise the functional and structural performance of the pavement. This promotes the development of distresses that can negatively affect user safety and contribute to increase the risk of accidents. In this context, the adoption of innovative solutions helps to improve the effectiveness of maintenance interventions and to slow the evolution of degradation phenomena. The aim of the thesis is to assess, through fracture mechanics theory and finite element modelling, the effectiveness of geocomposites in slowing crack propagation in a flexible pavement. The model was applied to two different maintenance configurations: a superficial intervention and a deep intervention. The results show that the inclusion of the geocomposite increases the number of load cycles required for crack propagation, thereby improving the overall durability of the pavement. This benefit becomes more significant with increasing reinforcement stiffness or in the case of deeper maintenance interventions, where the geocomposite contributes more effectively to limiting reflective cracking. The thesis therefore confirms that a durability-oriented maintenance strategy, supported by the use of reinforcement systems, represents an effective solution for extending the service life of pavements and reducing the impacts associated with maintenance interventions.

Abstract
The thesis therefore confirms that a durability-oriented maintenance strategy, supported by the use of reinforcement systems, represents an effective solution for extending the service life of pavements and reducing the impacts associated with maintenance interventions.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
