The thesis examines the 9th quarter of Novye Čerëmuški in Moscow, built between 1956 and 1958, as one of the first systematic laboratories of industrialised mass housing in the Soviet Union. The work is divided into two main parts: the first reconstructs the historical and political context of the Khrushchev turn; the second offers a critical reading of the complex on the basis of archival sources and the related redrawings. This study is the first attempt at a comprehensive reading of the quarter, investigated from its urban layout down to the typology of the dwellings. Seen in this light, the quarter emerges as a prototype of the Soviet mikrorajon and as the point of origin of the future chruščëvka, a decisive juncture in the transition from experimental construction to mass housing production.
