The present study aims to evaluate the hydraulic and treatment performance of constructed wetland systems located downstream of the combined sewer overflow (CSO) structures of two combined sewer networks managed by Alfa S.r.l. in the municipalities of Comabbio and Gorla Maggiore (VA), Italy. The analysis was carried out through the development of hydraulic models using the EPA SWMM software, properly calibrated to represent the behaviour of the sewer networks and the inflows generated to the natural treatment systems. The simulations were conducted considering synthetic rainfall events with a 10-year return period and different durations, analysing the performance of the facilities in terms of flow attenuation, utilisation of the available storage volumes, activation of overflow structures, and the overall response of the system. The hydraulic modelling was integrated with the results of a water quality monitoring campaign carried out at the two facilities in order to evaluate the actual pollutant removal efficiency and compare the effluent concentrations with the limits established by the current legislation. The results highlight how the different plant configurations contribute to the reduction of peak flows and the effective utilisation of the available storage volumes during the analysed events. The water quality analyses show a reduction in the main pollutants present in the combined sewer overflow waters, confirming the improvement in the quality of the overflow waters treated by the constructed wetland systems.

Abstract
The water quality analyses show a reduction in the main pollutants present in the combined sewer overflow waters, confirming the improvement in the quality of the overflow waters treated by the constructed wetland systems.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
