This thesis investigates whether a first Carbon Footprint Assessment (CFA) can act as a catalyst for the adoption of Circular Economy (CE) strategies in industrial small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). While carbon accounting (CA) and circular economy practices are often studied separately, limited research has examined how a carbon assessment may support the transition toward more circular business models. A qualitative multiple-case study was conducted through an immersive research placement within VERACY, an environmental consulting agency in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region of France. Six industrial SMEs participating in the Diag Décarbon’Action program were analyzed to examine the organizational changes triggered by a first CFA, the potential reuse of CA data for circularity measurement, and the role of environmental consultants in this process. The findings indicate that a first CFA does not directly generate advanced circular strategies. Instead, it acts as an enabling mechanism that increases environmental awareness, improves understanding of material and energy flows, and supports the development of organizational capabilities relevant to future circular initiatives. The study also identifies a significant overlap between CA and circularity data requirements. Although only 15.4% of the information collected during a standard CFA could be directly reused for circularity indicators, this proportion could reach 49.4% with improved data traceability. Finally, environmental consultants were found to play a critical intermediary role in translating environmental information into actionable strategies.
