Educational buildings make up a large part of Europe's old building stock. They often perform poorly in energy use, thermal comfort and indoor air quality. At the same time, climate change is expected to make summer overheating worse. This means that retrofit measures that work well today may not be enough in the future. This thesis studies how a set of retrofit measures affects the performance of an existing Italian school in Gallarate, Lombardy. It looks at both the present and the future climate. A dynamic model of the building was built in IESVE and checked against measured heating-energy data. Future weather files were created for the SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios up to the 2080s. Nine retrofit scenarios were then tested. These combined wall and roof insulation, external shading, a heat pump with photovoltaics, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, and night cooling. Energy use, thermal comfort (based on PMV categories) and indoor air quality (based on CO₂) were used as performance indicators. The results show that insulation reduces heating energy by about 29% and a heat pump by more than 80%. Only mechanical ven-tilation keeps indoor CO₂ at an acceptable level. The combined packages give the best comfort in the present climate. Under the future climate, heating demand and winter discomfort fall, but summer overheating rises sharply. The retrofits reduce this overheating but do not remove it. This shows that active cooling will be needed for the most severe scenarios.
