Platform business models have emerged as effective mechanisms for generating superior value for both organizations and users by matching two customer groups and leveraging network externalities. Traditionally, platforms facilitate these interactions through digital infrastructures that enable scalability and efficient matchmaking. Although platforms have historically originated in physical marketplaces, such as urban flea markets, digital technologies have dominated theoretical debate about the mechanisms and characteristics of platforms. Beyond well-known examples like Airbnb and Uber, several other organizations operate according to platform principles but are often overlooked in theoretical discourses because of their diverse network spread and interaction mechanisms. Entities such as coworking spaces and cooperatives aim to facilitate customer connections through non-digital means, exploring platform dynamics as pathways to enhanced resource collaboration. Therefore, this thesis defines overlooked cases as non-digital platforms and explores how their spatial and relational dimensions reshape the dynamics of known platform typologies. In this research context, the digitally driven knowledge offers valuable insights that can inform the exploration of value creation in unconventional areas. Given the limited theoretical understanding of non-digital platforms, this thesis aims to examine them by focusing on their distinctive value creation dynamics. Through an initial theoretical comparison between digital and non-digital platforms, the thesis identifies their defining characteristics and constructs a framework that highlights emerging areas of investigation. This work is based on five research papers that collectively examine non-digital dynamics and characteristics by studying the phenomena from multiple perspectives. The first paper identifies overarching non-digital platform characteristics, while subsequent studies delve into internal adoption in organizations to promote collaboration and serve as external business models for resource orchestration. This thesis frames non-digital platforms as human-centric transactional platforms, where individuals guide matchmaking, and value depends on their willingness to share knowledge. Their limited network scale does not constrain value creation; instead, it suits contexts that have been previously underexplored, such as intra-organizational collaborations and support for social goals. Given the roles of space, process design, and human endeavor, this thesis contributes to platform theory by defining unconventional platforms. This highlights the opportunity to consider these three factors independently to represent specific platform cases, yet intertwined by a renowned individual role. The identification of unconventional platforms aims to support practitioners in developing awareness of platform opportunities and structuring new dynamics for resource orchestration. This thesis outlines a roadmap for adopting platform mechanisms in unconventional settings to support long-term value creation strategies.
I modelli di business a piattaforma si sono affermati come meccanismi efficaci per generare un valore superiore sia per le organizzazioni sia per gli utenti, mettendo in relazione due gruppi di clienti e sfruttando le esternalità di rete. Tradizionalmente, le piattaforme favoriscono queste interazioni attraverso infrastrutture digitali che consentono di ampliare la scalabilità del network e di rendere più efficiente l’incontro tra le parti. Sebbene le piattaforme abbiano avuto origine in realtà fisiche, come i mercatini urbani, le tecnologie digitali hanno finito per dominare il dibattito teorico sui loro meccanismi e caratteristiche. Oltre a esempi noti come Airbnb e Uber, esistono numerose altre organizzazioni che operano secondo logiche di piattaforma, ma che vengono spesso trascurate dalla letteratura teorica a causa della diversa configurazione delle loro reti e dei loro meccanismi di interazione. Realtà come gli spazi di coworking e cooperative nascono per favorire connessioni tra gli utenti attraverso strumenti non digitali, utilizzando le dinamiche di piattaforma per rafforzare la collaborazione e la condivisione delle risorse. Questa tesi definisce tali casi, poco considerati, come ‘piattaforme non digitali’ e analizza come le loro dimensioni spaziali e relazionali ridefiniscono le dinamiche di note tipologie di piattaforme. In questo contesto, le conoscenze sviluppate nello studio delle piattaforme digitali offrono indicazioni preziose per comprendere la creazione di valore in ambiti non convenzionali. Considerata la limitata comprensione teorica delle piattaforme non digitali, questa tesi si propone di esaminarle, concentrandosi sulle loro dinamiche peculiari di creazione del valore. Attraverso un confronto teorico iniziale tra piattaforme digitali e non digitali, la tesi ne identifica le caratteristiche distintive e costruisce un quadro concettuale che evidenzia aree di ricerca emergenti. La tesi è composta da cinque articoli che, nel loro insieme, esaminano le dinamiche e le caratteristiche non digitali, affrontando il fenomeno da molteplici prospettive. Il primo articolo identifica le caratteristiche generali delle piattaforme non digitali, mentre gli studi successivi approfondiscono la loro adozione interna nelle organizzazioni per promuovere la collaborazione e il loro impiego come modelli di business esterni per l’orchestrazione delle risorse. La tesi interpreta le piattaforme non digitali come piattaforme transazionali incentrate sulle persone, in cui sono gli individui a guidare l’incontro tra le parti e la creazione di valore dipende dalla loro disponibilità a condividere conoscenze. La scala limitata del loro network non limita la creazione di valore, al contrario, si adatta a contesti finora poco esplorati, come le collaborazioni intra-organizzative e il sostegno a obiettivi sociali. Ponendo l’accento sul ruolo dello spazio, sulla progettazione dei processi e sul contributo umano, questa tesi amplia la teoria delle piattaforme definendole come “non convenzionali”. Ne emerge la possibilità di considerare questi tre fattori separatamente per descrivere specifici casi di piattaforma, pur riconoscendo che essi restano strettamente connessi dal ruolo centrale dell’individuo. L’identificazione delle piattaforme non convenzionali mira ad aiutare i professionisti a sviluppare una maggiore consapevolezza delle opportunità offerte dalle logiche a piattaforma e sviluppare nuove modalità di orchestrazione delle risorse. Questa tesi delinea una direzione per l’adozione di meccanismi a piattaforma in contesti non convenzionali, al fine di sostenere strategie di creazione del valore a lungo termine.
