1914-2014. In three years we celebrate the hundred year anniversary since the beginning of the First World War. Regions and provinces are getting ready to celebrate the event, especially those in the north of Italy. Trentino-Alto Adige is the region with the most numerous initiatives, as the memory of the World War is still carved in the memory of the people and of the lands, transformed by the military presence. Over 100 fortifications and hundreds kilometres of trenches made Trentino the strategic bulwark against Italy, as back then it was part of the Austro- Hungarian Empire with the name of “Tirolo”. In order to keep such memory alive, in 2003 the Province of Trento approved the “Project of the Great War”. The project does not represents just a series of celebrations and commemorations, but an awareness of the territory, to return the meaning of the war within Trentino, Europe and the rest of the world. It is not meant to celebrate a specific date, but a moment in history, the life of soldiers and people during the war, the history behind the lands and fortifications. One of the key point of the project entitles an effort to recover the military artefacts and paths through the launch of the “Peace Path”: a 400km pathway along the old Austrian fence. The dissertation pertain a piece of this Path, by Brione Mountain, near Riva del Garda. It is one of the most beautiful historical pathway in Europe either for the architectural evidences, which show development of military construction techniques and different Austro-Hungarian fortifications across the end of nineteen century and the First World War, and for the breath-taking view on Garda Lake. Moving from a broad base of historical documentation and from the written evidences, the work aims to tell the story of a soldier, the emotions, the thoughts, and the experiences through architectural events. The scenes is located in five key points of the path and are characterised by the tight link with the environment and (meticulous) selection of materials. The goal is to induce each visitors to revisit, feel and live once again those values which makes up to everyone’s historical memory.
