The Italian nuclear program, shut off in 1988 after the opinion movement raised by the accident of Chernobyl in Ukraine, is about to be re-established: the construction of eight to ten large nuclear power plants (NPP) during the next twenty years in envisaged. The installation of a NPP involves a number of by-products that can be exploited throughout the operational life of the plant; purpose of this work is the identification of the most attractive synergies between these by-products and a series of industrial/energetic appliances, culminating in the evaluation of the feasibility of the latter. In order to be viable, an appliance needs to be (1) technically feasible and economically convenient and (2) compatible with the constraints and requirements imposed by nuclear Emergency Planning regulations: we analyzed both these aspects with regards to the Italian case via a depiction of the most promising applications followed by a scenario analysis; pre-feasibility studies concerning two of the aforementioned appliances - nuclear-powered district heating and ethanol production - conclude this paper.

Abstract
The Italian nuclear program, shut off in 1988 after the opinion movement raised by the accident of Chernobyl in Ukraine, is about to be re-established: the construction of eight to ten large nuclear power plants (NPP) during the next twenty years in envisaged. The installation of a NPP involves a number of by-products that can be exploited throughout the operational life of the plant; purpose of this work is the identification of the most attractive synergies between these by-products and a series of industrial/energetic appliances, culminating in the evaluation of the feasibility of the latter. In order to be viable, an appliance needs to be (1) technically feasible and economically convenient and (2) compatible with the constraints and requirements imposed by nuclear Emergency Planning regulations: we analyzed both these aspects with regards to the Italian case via a depiction of the most promising applications followed by a scenario analysis; pre-feasibility studies concerning two of the aforementioned appliances - nuclear-powered district heating and ethanol production - conclude this paper.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
