Urban regeneration and design of a new library at the Icam industrial site, Lecco

I conceived the project I am going to illustrate in the present Thesis while attending the final laboratory course of Architectural-Engineering. My team was composed also of 2 international students, Gerardo Francisco Diosdado Espinosa and Janaina Gerde Muniz, who helped me with the urban analysis and research. In that period we head that the Icam Factory, well known for its production of fine chocolate, was displacing from Lecco to Como. Following the suggestion of our Professor Massimo Tadi, we thought that the Icam’s area could be the base for our project. As a matter of fact, the construction of the new university campus would increase both the number of students and the need of accommodations. Moreover, in 2003 the Town Council of Lecco announced a competition for the creation of a public library in the area called Ex Piccola Velocità. I match all these factors and I decided to design an intervention of urban regeneration of the industrial area, integrating a library and a residence for students

L'idea per questa tesi è nata durante il laboratorio di sintesi finale. Il mio gruppo era composto anche da due studenti internazionali, Gerardo Francisco Diosdado Espinosa e Janaina Gerde Muniz. Recenti notizie dichiaravano l'intenzione della storica fabbrica di cioccolato lecchese, la ICAM, di trasferire la sua attività nel comasco. Su suggerimento del Prof. Massimo Tadi, abbiamo iniziato a pensare quale potesse essere la trasformazione dell'ex sito industriale. La realizzazione del nuovo campus universitario, presso l'ex ospedale, porterà sicuramente all'aumento di persone e quindi alla necessità di nuove abitazioni. Inoltre, nel 2003, il comune di Lecco aveva indetto un concorso per la realizzazione della nuova biblioteca, che fino ad ora non ha però avuto alcun seguito. Combinando insieme questi tre fattori è nata l'idea di sviluppare un progetto di rigenerazione urbana dell'ex zona industriale, con l'inserimento di residenze per studenti e il progetto della nuova biblioteca civica.
