The Internet of Things heralds the rise of smart products, which combine a physical component with online services. These products, by definition, are a form of product-service system. In a nutshell, the Internet of Things refers to the ability to transform all products into product-service systems, ie. physical products with online service components. However, the mainstream adoption of the Internet of Things will be unlikely and, at the very least, difficult and fragmented without a platform to support it. This platform – the metaphorical equivalent of the electric grid for the light bulb – is far better developed proactively rather than as an afterthought.

Abstract

The Internet of Things heralds the rise of smart products, which combine a physical component with online services. These products, by definition, are a form of product-service system. In a nutshell, the Internet of Things refers to the ability to transform all products into product-service systems, ie. physical products with online service components. However, the mainstream adoption of the Internet of Things will be unlikely and, at the very least, difficult and fragmented without a platform to support it. This platform – the metaphorical equivalent of the electric grid for the light bulb – is far better developed proactively rather than as an afterthought.
