This paper aims at realizing an exploratory study on the state of art and the potential of Mobile Maintenance in Italian companies, following a precise logical path. First, the context of the analysis, the e-Maintenance, is presented, giving moreover a personal definition of the Mobile Maintenance concept, highlighting features, functionalities and use in maintenance emerging from the existing literature. Hereafter, existing instruments of Mobile Maintenance are classified into three families, and each technology is described in terms of historical development, technical features, market analysis and use in maintenance. Following this, three matrices are presented, with the target to define which one of the mobile management technologies (PDAs, Smartphone, Tablet) best fits the features of a specific company. To demonstrate what is stated above, an extensive case study and a questionnaire are presented, and from the latter ten SWOT analysis, related to the Mobile Maintenance, are obtained, one for each companies that answered the survey. In conclusion of the work, main areas of use and related barriers are deeply analyzed, proposing possible solutions to reduce them and some ideas for the future development of the Mobile Maintenance topic.
