Abstract This thesis analyzes the impact of business strategies on the performance of software firms that have entered the open source software (OSS) field. The notion of the OSS business model is discussed in the light of a substantial body of theoretical literature concerning strategic management and the economics of innovation, as well as specialized literature on OSS. This empirically oriented research uses a unique data from the software industries of five European countries (Finland, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain) to illuminate these patterns of private, entrepreneurial provision of software placed in the public domain. The database comprises information from 915 European software firms of which 378 (or about 39%) were the suppliers of the Open Source Software (OSS) solutions at the time of the survey, the end of the year 2004. This thesis examines the stability of business models over performance in the evolution of the industry.
