Mechanical Department from Politecnico di Milano, through the participation to the international competition Shell Eco-Marathon®, aims to realize high efficient electric vehicles in order to develop innovative solutions which will be applied on urban vehicles in the near future. Shell Eco-Marathon® is an international competition sponsored by the oil company Royal Dutch Shell®, in order to encourage universities and technical colleges in the creation and implementation of high energy efficient vehicles. The first edition in the World was held in 1939 and was named Shell Mileage Marathon®. The event was created due to a bet between some Shell's scientist in the Illinois. They organized a competition to see which of their cars could run more miles using a gallon of fuel. Over the years the competition has grown and expanded, reaching an international connotation. The first European edition took place at the French circuit “Paul Armagnac” in Nogaro during 1985. About 200 teams from all over Europe took part to Shell Eco-Marathon Europe® 2011, which took place at the German circuit “Eurospeedway Lausitzring” from 23rd to 29th of May. Mechanical Department from Politecnico di Milano has taken part at the competition from 2005. Its vehicles, honoured with several awards during the various editions, retain many Italian records. Moreover the solar prototype Apollo set during the 2011 edition the new world record. This year the team from Politecnico di Milano presented to the contest a new vehicle, named "Daphne". The topic of this work concerns the project, manufacturing and verifying through finite-elements analysis of the suspensions, transmission and braking- system of the energy-efficient vehicle “Daphne”, built by the team of the Politecnico di Milano, for the Shell Eco-Marathon® Europe 2011. Daphne is the first vehicle built by the team of the Politecnico di Milano competing in the “Urban Concepts” category and will be the basis on which develop and realize new vehicles of the same category for the future editions of the competition. Due to the fact that Daphne is a completely new vehicle, it has been possible to control the entire process of the realization of the car, starting from preliminary studies and then moving to the design of all the components. This phase was followed by the manufacturing and the building. The report describes the studying, the structural verifying and the finite elements analysis of the principal components of the suspensions, transmission and braking system.
