Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are one of the most promising technologies for crashes absorption and vibrations reduction. These fluids, called smart fluids, are able to drastically change their rheological properties with the application of a magnetic field. This characteristic, together with an high reaction velocity and a low power requirement, makes them widely studied and used in every engineering sector. The objective of this work is to analyze and simulate the magnetorheological behaviour of the fluid MRF-132LD. Initially the study is a numerical analysis, simulations based on the Bingham and Herschel-Bulkley model are made. Afterwards, simulation results are compared to experimental results, these are obtained by a pilot plant expressly designed. In this way is possible to understand the effectiveness and limits of this technology, to compare the model reliability and to modify them in order to obtain more realistic simulations. Finally, MR fluids sedimentation is studied, mechanical and magnetic variations caused by her and possible problems for devices.
I fluidi magnetoreologici (MR) rappresentano una delle tecnologie più promettenti per l'assorbimento degli urti e lo smorzamento delle vibrazioni. Questi fluidi, detti intelligenti, sono in grado di variare drasticamente le loro proprietà reologiche con l'applicazione di un campo magnetico. Questa caratteristica, unitamente all'elevata velocità di reazione e al basso assorbimento di energia, li ha resi un sistema largamente studiato ed utilizzato in ogni settore ingegneristico. L'obiettivo del seguente lavoro è quello di analizzare e simulare il comportamento magnetoreologico del fluido MRF-132LD. Inizialmente l'analisi è di tipo numerico, simulando il comportamento mediante il modello di Bingham e di Herschel-Bulkley. In seguito, i risultati delle simulazioni vengono confrontati con dei valori sperimentali ottenuti mediante un impianto appositamente realizzato. In tal modo è possibile comprendere l'efficacia e i limiti di questa tecnologia, di confrontare l'affidabilità dei due modelli e di rielaborarli per ottenere delle simulazioni più realistiche. Per ultimo, è stato studiato il problema della sedimentazione a cui sono soggetti i fluidi MR, le variazioni meccaniche e magnetiche che comporta e le possibili conseguenze sui dispositivi.
