The present work has the aim to investigate the use of glass in architecture, with a special focus on the architecture of the service sector, which characterized Milan’s landscape during the last decade. To be more precise, the research develop the application of glass at the vertical closing elements, which have a primary role in the architectural contemporary background because: they characterized the formal aspect of the building; they are presented as one of the highest technological component; they have the capability to influence the inner comfort and the quality of living; they represent a large testing ground for technological and material experimentation; and they encourage the industrialization process of the construction elements adding quality at their main role of protection and enclosure of the inner spaces. By comparing all the buildings considered in this work and considering the main characteristics of their envelopes, it has been outlined three main topics, and to be more precise: the staging of the envelope’s system, the control of solar radiation, and the level of prefabrication in the vertical closing system. The ultimate purpose is to understand how the contemporary Milan’s architecture, which use vertical glass closing elements, deal with these subjects, which are the events that derives from the relationship between the functional principals and the formal outcomes; and to identify how these systems handle with the saving energy theme, even more preeminent during a crisis situation as the one we are leaving.

Abstract
The ultimate purpose is to understand how the contemporary Milan’s architecture, which use vertical glass closing elements, deal with these subjects, which are the events that derives from the relationship between the functional principals and the formal outcomes; and to identify how these systems handle with the saving energy theme, even more preeminent during a crisis situation as the one we are leaving.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
