In this work the application of photochromic materials, belonging to the class of diarylethenes, has been studied in order to build a point diffraction interferometer (PDI) for the optical testing of lenses and mirrors. Firstly, photochromic polyurethane films with good optical quality and high contrast between the coloured and the uncoloured form have been produced and characterized. A theoretical model has been proposed in order to predict the behaviour of the interferometer and to correlate the interferograms quality to the photochromic material properties i.e. the absorbance in the coloured form. Photochromic PDIs have been produced and their performances have been evaluated, underlining the advantages provided by the use of photochromic materials such as the rewritability, the possibilty of optimization of the fringe visibility and the possibility of optically writing pinholes with custom size, depending on the writing parameters.

Abstract
In this work the application of photochromic materials, belonging to the class of diarylethenes, has been studied in order to build a point diffraction interferometer (PDI) for the optical testing of lenses and mirrors. Firstly, photochromic polyurethane films with good optical quality and high contrast between the coloured and the uncoloured form have been produced and characterized. A theoretical model has been proposed in order to predict the behaviour of the interferometer and to correlate the interferograms quality to the photochromic material properties i.e. the absorbance in the coloured form. Photochromic PDIs have been produced and their performances have been evaluated, underlining the advantages provided by the use of photochromic materials such as the rewritability, the possibilty of optimization of the fringe visibility and the possibility of optically writing pinholes with custom size, depending on the writing parameters.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
