The greater use of composite materials involves the use of different methods of union in comparison to the metals, such as bonding. In the present work we want to study the crack propagation in a bonded tapered single-lap joint made by composite adherends by the use of optical sensors, more precisely FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating). These sensors are becoming more and more important in the diagnostic applications thanks to their peculiar characteristics. It will be introduced the optical fibers describing their characteristics and their properties. Then, it will be described a formalism for the spectral response simulation of a fiber Bragg grating. Using these results together with the joint's finite element model in order to find the strain, it will be defined the position where the sensors should be bonded on the specimen to acquire the reflective peaks.

Abstract
The greater use of composite materials involves the use of different methods of union in comparison to the metals, such as bonding. In the present work we want to study the crack propagation in a bonded tapered single-lap joint made by composite adherends by the use of optical sensors, more precisely FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating). These sensors are becoming more and more important in the diagnostic applications thanks to their peculiar characteristics. It will be introduced the optical fibers describing their characteristics and their properties. Then, it will be described a formalism for the spectral response simulation of a fiber Bragg grating. Using these results together with the joint's finite element model in order to find the strain, it will be defined the position where the sensors should be bonded on the specimen to acquire the reflective peaks.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
