Aerotropolis

The object of our thesis “Aerotropolis” is to examine the relation between city and airport during the time to act as the basis of developing a project that tries to imagine the comparison between these two in the future. Compared to these first analyses, we hypothesized that in the future the airport will become the primary mode of movement and this brings it to be a part of the city, even overlap on it. Our project, moreover, contemplates that the airport is not just an air connection between continents, but becomes also a physic connection; for this motive we chose Istanbul that is situated in the middle between the Orient and the Occident. Furthermore, as an emblem of infrastructure, we chose to put our airport on another element of connection: the bridge. In Istanbul, in fact, the bridge has always been the most important element of connection between the two shores around which the city expanded. So we chose to position our airport on the third bridge that is planned to be built, situated on the north of Istanbul, that will become an important terrestrial and naval junction for Europe and Asia. Following the development principle of Istanbul we hypothesized that with the construction of the third bridge the city will grow and expand without interruption, also on the water. The Airport-Bridge will be therefore bared literally by the city below. The overlapping of these three elements, the bridge, the airport and the city creates the Aerotropolis, a place in which the programs interweave – a new vision of the city of the future.

L’obiettivo della nostra tesi “Aerotropolis” è quello di studiare il rapporto tra città e aeroporto nel corso del tempo e, in base a queste analisi, sviluppare un progetto che provi a immaginare il rapporto tra città e aeroporto nel futuro. Rispetto alle prime analisi abbiamo ipotizzato che nel futuro l’aeroporto diventerà il mezzo principale per spostarsi e per questo motivo diventerà parte della città, fino a sovrapporsi ad essa. Il nostro progetto, inoltre, prevede che l’aeroporto non sia solo una connessione aerea tra diversi continenti, ma che diventi anche una connessione fisica; per questo motivo abbiamo scelto Istanbul che si trovo a cavallo tra oriente e occidente. Inoltre in quanto emblema infrastrutturale, abbiamo scelto di posizionare il nostro aeroporto su un altro elemento di collegamento: il ponte. A Istanbul, infatti, il ponte è sempre stato centrale come elemento di collegamento delle due sponde e in base ad esso la città si è sviluppata. Abbiamo, quindi, posizionato il nostro aeroporto sul terzo ponte che è in progetto di costruzione nella parte più a nord della città, che diventerà lo snodo principale terrestre e navale sia per l’Europa che per l’Asia. Seguendo il principio di sviluppo di Istanbul abbiamo ipotizzato che con la costruzione di un terzo ponte la città crescerà e si espanderà senza interruzione anche in acqua; il ponte aeroporto verrà quindi sostenuto dalla città sottostante. La sovrapposizione di questi tre elementi, il ponte, l’aeroporto e la città dà vita all’Aerotropolis, luogo in cui le programmi si intrecciano e danno vita a una nuova visione della città del futuro.
