This paper aims to study the contribution of renewable energy sources in electricity generation. The analytical method adopted is top-down. It starts with the world energy consumption trend, gives details about the role of renewable energies in the US and ends with a feasibility study of a solar and a wind power plant in a small American county showing positive economical, social and environmental impacts. Also five different alternative energy sources namely, biomass fuels, geothermal power, hydropower, solar power and wind power are presented with their technological advantages and limits.
