The research proposes the reading of a landscape and tries to recognize its identity through architecture. The context is the Lago Maggiore, one of the principal Italian pre-alpine lakes, on the border between Piedmont and Lombardy. A landscape formed by constant stratifications of autochthonous characters and external cultures; a result of conflicts between different civilizations and different ways of development; a place characterized by intense and often international architectural experimentations. The lake is the outcome of a story not at all linear; there is no a dominant and unitary structure. The choice was to describe and narrate it in a non-continuous way, without the pretension of being systematic, moving from episodes, from moments, from places. The method of the research is fundamentally analogical. Architectures are observed in their physical immediacy and in their symbolic aspects, as parts of a landscape. A landscape characterized by intense imaginative and figurative characters, that is not separable from the myth, from the literature and from the ideal vision that accompany it. Its identity rises from the superimposition and the contrast between these different figures. It’s therefore not possible to rely on positive and systematic methods of territorial and landscape analysis, that in other situations have proved successful. Too complex is the system of cross-references and juxtapositions on which the lake is based. Accepting the absolute peculiarity of the context, is been searched a new and more suitable way to observe and understand it. To a certain extent, an architects way, related to the project one. The thesis is organized by parts, each one characterized by a certain autonomy and each one coming to life and enriching each other from the comparison. The first part, The lake as an archipelago, describes territorial structures from which the settlements have taken shape. The defensive and the religious system, formed by knots and places, are seen as the basis of an organization and of a large-scale drawing. The second part, Forms of the city, is based on a different point of view and opens up to the aspects of heterogeneity and variety of the lake. The different historical and political destinies of its parts have contributed to define a strongly polycentric structure. But nevertheless the architectural cultures have diversified themselves and gave rise to a variety of morphological systems and figures. The third and final part, The imagined lake, tries to relate aspects of collective imagination with the real processes of construction. This part is the most linked one to possible project outcomes. The lake finally appears as a great and wonderful scene of stories and figures, as an impressive and articulate square onto which different, dense and contrasting worlds appear. Each one of the three sections that compose the thesis is accompanied by an anthological part that expands their meaning and content and suggests relationships. It’s a heterogeneous collection of passages rich in suggestion. They emphasize the fragmentary nature of the work and at the same time enrich it. They want to help to rebuild the link between the specific contribution of this research and the various traditions of the historical and critical work on the architecture of the lake.
