The main object of this work is the inspection of a furnace for electroslag remelting (ESR) which produces 2000 mm diameter and 150 t weight ingots. The size of the remelted ingots makes this plant the first of this kind in Europe, it’s a new generation plant due to presence of two electrode-changing towers and due to the final size of the remelted products. This plant allows to produce large defect-free forged ingots largely employed in power industry. The first part of this work concerns three different type of remelted steels; characterized by visual, metallographic, inclusional examinations and by tensile tests. This main focus of this part are the problems and the improvements achieved during first remeltings. In the second part a first-try mathematical model of the process is presented: current distribution, electromagnetic forces and temperature distribution in the steady state part of the ingot are studied to be the basis of a more in-depth simulation.
