Spazi in attesa. Strategie e processi attuabili tra dismissione e nuovo uso

This thesis begins with the analysis of processes of transformation which in time have brought overlapping traces on the territory, each one possessing its own cycle of life, each one defined by its precise identity, answering to the needs and to the characteristics of a precise moment in history during which it took form. Since there is a continuous deformation of the landscape and of its underlying meaning , attention is made to the precise moment in which the area changes and turns into another form, that is the moment of transformation. This is a period of transition between the moment in which an area loses its efficacy and the moment in which a project defines a new potentiality. The thesis researches this in-between period, outlining the two principal moments of the transformation: that of the building site and, secondly and the one preceding it, where the area is like a land waiting for its definition. This research has examined these two temporary aspects , underlining how each of them can be an opportunity to assign temporary use to a space unoccupied, for the moment, by any plan. This thesis refers to those precise projects which are on the border between architecture, exhibit and landscaping and which allow an interaction with the building site experience. But it also refers to the experiences that evolve into spontaneous temporary re-appropriation of the territory. Finally the thesis finalizes its research into a planning dimension, whose objective is to verify whether the project of design has in itself the instruments to operate in a hybrid space which is not yet neither landscape nor architecture. One wants to demonstrate this deploying a device to be inserted into the Ex Area Falck in Sesto San Giovanni and demonstrating that the design project is able to encompass the elements tied to the unforeseen processes of transformation, and therefore becoming a flexible and termporary instrument. The project consists of a modular system, which , like a protected membrane, allows one to have access to, and “ live “ the Ex Falck area. No access has been permitted for the last twenty years and for another 15 it will be the site for the Renzo Piano project. The equipment devised supposes temporary activities inserted in an uninhabited area which gradually reactivate it allowing it to reach the dynamics of a city within a few years. Moreover, considering the interest shown by the property and by the Studio RPBW in beginning a process of participation with the community, the project represents a step in this direction, becoming a narrative tool of the current transformation.

La tesi parte dall’analisi dei processi di trasformazione che hanno portato nel tempo alla sovrapposizione di differenti scritture sul territorio, ognuna dotata di un proprio ciclo di vita, ognuna definita da un’identità precisa, rispondente alle necessità e alle caratteristiche del momento storico in cui ha preso forma. Dato il continuo deformarsi del paesaggio e dei significati che esso incarna, Si pone l’attenzione sul momento preciso in cui il luogo muta e cambia forma, ovvero quello della trasformazione. Si tratta di un tempo di transizione tra il momento in cui un luogo esaurisce risorse ed efficacia e il momento in cui un progetto ne definisce nuove potenzialità. La tesi indaga questo tempo di mezzo, delineando due momenti principali della trasformazione: quello del cantiere edile e quello che lo precede, in cui il luogo è come una terra in attesa di definizione. La ricerca ha approfondito questi due volti temporanei, evidenziando come ciascuna di esse possa essere un’occasione per attribuire usi temporanei ad uno spazio momentaneamente presidiato da nessun progetto. La tesi fa riferimento a quei progetti al confine tra allestimento, architettura e paesaggio che consentono di interagire con l’esperienza del cantiere, ma anche a quelle esperienze, in cui si attuano processi spontanei di riappropriazione temporanea del territorio. La tesi infine si concretizza in una dimensione progettuale, che ha come obiettivo quello di verificare se il progetto di design ha in sé gli strumenti per intervenire in uno spazio ibrido, che ancora non è né paesaggio, né architettura. Si vuole dimostrare, attraverso il progetto di un dispositivo da inserirsi all’interno delle Ex aree Falck a Sesto San Giovanni, che il progetto di design ha la capacità di accogliere in sé elementi legati all’imprevedibilità dei processi di trasformazione, facendosi strumento flessibile e temporaneo. Il progetto consiste un sistema modulare, che come una membrana protetta consente di accedere e “abitare”, l’area Ex Falck, il cui accesso è interdetto da quasi vent’anni e che per altri 15 sarà cantiere del progetto di Renzo Piano. Il dispositivo immagina di inserire delle attività temporanee che fungano da riattivazione graduale di un spazio non abitato, che nel giro di qualche anno assorbirà le dinamiche proprie di una città. Inoltre, considerato, l’interesse da parte della proprietà e dello studio RPBW, nel dare il via ad un processo di partecipazione con la comunità, il progetto rappresenta un passo in questa direzione, divenendo strumento di narrazione della trasformazione in corso.
