Abstract
Sandwich panels allow to obtain an high flexional stiffness and at the same time an high capacity of energy absorption, keeping the component light as well. Nevertheless, they could be very sensitive to low velocity impacts. This type of impulsive loads can seriously compromise the structural integrity of the panels, drastically reducing their resistance. The aim of this work is the investigation about the residual structural integrity of sandwich panels after low velocity impacts. The tested sandwich panels consisted in a Nomex honeycomb core and two Al2024-T3 aluminium skins. An appropriate and complete experimental campaign has been carried out in order to characterize the mechanical properties, and the impact behavior of these panels, building the base for the development of future numerical models able to reproduce the damage consequently to low velocity impacts. Finally a statistical analysis has been followed to analyze which parameters (i.e. thickness of the samples rather than velocity test) could affect the flatwise compression tests and the Compression After Impact tests.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
