Some of the most famous racing car classes, as Formula 1, require a fully exposed wheel. This kind of wheel produces an high drag and a positive lift that can negatively affect the total vehicle aerodynamics. Nevertheless, the rotating wheels are considered one of the main sources of drag and noise, they contribute around 40% to the total drag of the vehicles. Wind tunnel experiment and CFD studies were largely used to study this complex flow-field. Nevertheless the match between the experimental results and the numerical simulation are not enough consistent. This project tries to fill this gap, and is especially focused on the generated vortex on the rear of the wheel in both steady and transient simulations. The Navier-Stokes equation are solved using the transient Detached Eddies Simulation (DES) model. This modification of the RANS equation is able to switch Solver model from URANS, used in the attached boundary layer, to Large Eddies Simulation (LES), used in the free shear flow. This model showed great advantages compared to both the URANS and LES models, especially in the eddies detached. Structured cut-cell meshes that demonstrate a great potential with fully turbulent flow are used. The suitability of this meshes are tested in order to validate the result of both Steady and Unsteady simulation on such complex geometry. Different Turbulence models and numerical solvers are applied and largely compared. The Fackrell A2 wheel is used in order to better compare the experimental data with this CFD study.

Abstract
The Fackrell A2 wheel is used in order to better compare the experimental data with this CFD study.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
