Abstract

The continuous monitoring, oriented to the maintenance scheduling, and the control, oriented to the high efficiency conversion, represent fundamental tasks in photovoltaic power plants. One of the most promising solutions to face these aspects is represented by the embedding of electronic devices (sensor and power electronic converters) on each component of the plant. The research activity discussed in this dissertation has been principally focused on the development of a distributed measurement system based on this architecture: each photovoltaic panel of the considered plant is equipped with a “smart-sensor”, specifically designed to host the proposed monitoring and control functions. Both these functions are based on a fundamental key element: the photovoltaic electric model. The development of a simple but still accurate model has been one of the main focuses of the research activity. One of the principal features of this new model is surely represented by the linear procedure for the parameters extraction, which can be easily performed starting from experimental measurements or PV panel datasheet. In the dissertation, all the mentioned aspects have been deeply analysed and then tested by means of an exhaustive experimental activity. The experimental results have validated the goodness of the model and its successfully application, for the monitoring and control activities, has demonstrated that it represents a valuable instrument for the development of the proposed smart-sensor.
