Transformation of the nature and the society leave unmistakable, highly specific signs on physical spaces. The signs embedded in space, on the other hand, come from the past and we register them in the present, aware that they will continue to exist in the future. “Reading” thus means identifying the signs of physical space, extracting them from the layers in which they are embedded, interpreting, ordering and recomposing them in systems that are meaningful for us also today. In the course of the process it is necessary to understand but also to imagine, forming sequences of plausible hypothesis: and this means designing. So we can say that reading has to be carried out with an open mind oriented towards design, in order to disclose the past and foresee the future. Natural system and its human uses are of central importance in urban regions, where diverse green spaces and built spaces of essentially equal value spatially intertwine. In this case, undoubtedly, main element of the past, present and future is the River. River is realized as strong natural system, which forms land and changes frequently in course of history and geography. It is alive and contributes life. Urban riverbanks are attractive locations and highly prized recreational environments. Dynamic movement of river shape the land and effect quality of the soil in which generates diverse eco-system and leave signs on physical space. So, discovering signs of different realms and lands with their own characters along the river in territorial scale is significant, because this reading shows several types of land made by nature or human to meet their needs in a certain time. In fact, different types of interferences of human took place in different zones, for instance; protected areas, agricultural land, industrial zone, artificial forest, recreational zone and the most important area where is consolidated city. Then consequently this question “why human chose this specific area for that function?” helped us to distinguish main differences and recognize the essence of each part. In another hand the designs of urban river landscapes must fulfill a broad range of requirements: flood control, open space design, and ecology are as a rule the three dominant themes, and they must often be reconciled within a very restricted space. The river must be understood as a process: governed by changing water levels, shifting seasons, erosion, and sedimentation, the river environment is not a static entity but constantly changing--the design must be flexible and take this into account. The focus is on not only long-term, sustainable measures over decades or generations, but usual planning and design horizon of years or a couple of decades. "Reading" così significa individuare i segni di spazio fisico, estraendoli dagli strati in cui sono immersi, interpretare, ordinare e li ricompone in sistemi che sono significativi anche per noi oggi. Nel corso del processo è necessario comprendere ma anche immaginare, formando sequenze di ipotesi plausibile: e questo significa progettare. Sistema naturale e dei suoi usi umani sono di centrale importanza nelle zone urbane, dove diversi spazi verdi e spazi costruiti di valore sostanzialmente uguale nello spazio si intrecciano. In questo caso, senza dubbio, elemento principale del passato, presente e futuro è il fiume.
