Talking about typography, the first thing coming to everyone’s mind is the latin alphabet and its styles. However, globalization has made it necessary to face other realities,like asian ones, that doesn’t make use of the alphabet as we know it. This thesis’ aim is to describe the origins and evolution of Japanese writing and how those affected its digital transposition, from the first computers to the advent of Unicode standard, with a keen eye on typographic rules and technical aspects that are used today.

Quando si parla di tipografia la prima cosa a cui si pensa è spesso l’alfabeto latino,con tutti i suoi stili. Tuttavia la globalizzazione ha reso necessario confrontarsi anche con altre realtà, come quelle asiatiche, che non ne fanno uso. Scopo di questa tesi è il descrivere le origini e l’evoluzione della scrittura giapponese e come queste abbiano influito sulla sua trasposizione in digitale, dai primi computer all’avvento dello standard Unicode, con particolare attenzione alle regole tipografiche e agli aspetti tecnici più importanti oggi.
