Biopolymers. Expressive sensory investigation compared to fossil fuel polymers

The study aims to determine if, between objects made from polymers derived from petroleum and biopolymers, sensory differences exist and, if they were detectable, in that order of magnitude and the nature. To perform such investigations I have found on the market commonly used tools such as combs, toothbrushes, flower pots, respectively in the version made of biopolymer and made of fossil-fuel polymer taking care to recover pairs of objects similar to each other in order to avoid that the shape influenced the judgment. Research is not easy because the market currently provides rare items in biopolymers. Therefore, the comparison was limited to only three pairs of objects. The survey was conducted by subjecting the pairs of objects in conventional polymers and biopolymers in a test in which people, after exploring the various products, have expressed their opinions, both from the point of view of the meanings that the products can evoke, both in terms of sensory quality of materials. From the results of the tests arising differences between products made ​​of conventional polymers and those made of biopolymers, both as regards the qualitative characteristics that the sensory properties. In some cases, significant differences were perceived between the couple’s objects as in the case of two toothbrushes. We could see that the various reviews expressed depend on many factors, such as the color and even the nationality of examiners. A constant of various reviews seems to be the perception of greater product naturalness in biopolymers but is at the same time less pleasant than that in conventional polymers.

La tesi vuole verificare se tra gli oggetti realizzati in polimeri derivati dal petrolio e biopolimeri esistono differenze sensoriali e, nel caso fossero rilevabili, in che ordine di grandezza e di che natura. Per compiere tali indagini sono stati reperiti sul mercato utensili di uso comune quali pettini, spazzolini da denti, vasi per piantine rispettivamente nella versione in biopolimero e in polimero tradizionali avendo cura di recuperare coppie di oggetti fra loro molto simili in modo da evitare ch la forma influenzasse il giudizio. Ricerca non facile perché il mercato, attualmente, fornisce rari oggetti in biopolimeri. Pertanto il confronto è stato limitato a tre sole coppie di oggetti. L’indagine è stata condotta sottoponendo le coppie di oggetti in polimeri tradizionali e in biopolimeri ad un test in cui le persone, dopo aver esplorato i vari prodotti, hanno espresso il loro giudizi, si dal punto di vista dei significati che posso evocare i prodotti, sia dal punto di vista delle qualità sensoriali dei materiali. Dai risultati dei test risultano percepite differenze tra i prodotti realizzati con polimeri tradizionali e quelli realizzati con biopolimeri, sia per quanto riguarda le caratteristiche qualitative che le di proprietà sensoriali. In alcuni casi sono state percepite notevoli differenze tra gli oggetti della coppia come nel caso dei due spazzolini. Si è potuto riscontrare che i vari giudizi espressi dipendono da molteplici fattori, quali il colore e anche la nazionalità degli esaminatori. Una costante dei vari giudizi risulta essere la percezione di maggiore naturalezza del prodotto in biopolimeri che però risulta al contempo meno gradevole di quello in polimeri tradizionali.
