The purpose of this thesis is to exploit the concept of the adjoint operator in the field of the shape optimization in external flows, in order to obtain the sensitivity of the deformation of a body with respect to an objective function, both with two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases. To achieve this purpose, RANS model has been used, together with the open source program OpenFOAM. The calculation of the adjoint has been first applied on a 2D case, where the validity of the procedure has been demonstrated by developing a deformation script for the considered NACA airfoil, both in laminar and turbulent regime. The analysis then moved to the 3D, where the method has been applied to various aerodynamic shape bodies: the sensitivity has been successfully extracted also in this case, and allowed either to highlight the zones of the body more suitable to a modification, and the direction on which perform the deformation, in order to obtain an improvement for the desired performance.
